In-Depth Acer Nitro 5 Review
As for its design, the Acer Nitro 5 is neither too fancy-looking nor comes adorned with flashy accents and lighting like many premium, high priced gaming laptops. Even so, this is one good-looking machine, with matte black finishes on the chassis and a triangular design that gives the device a unique look. Its simple yet elegant look seems to attract a lot of users, including youngsters. It is further made to look like a gamer’s machine with the addition of the red trimmings on the keyboard.
The laptop is made entirely of plastic, which raises concerns about its durability; however, as you would expect from any other device from Acer, this one is also built to be strong and durable, following the company’s standards. Despite its good looks, you cannot deny the fact that it does look bulky, and at 5.95 pounds, it certainly is bigger than many other models in the category and price range. As a result, carrying the laptop with you wherever you go could be really troublesome, and it would be hard to fit it into your 15-inch laptop backpack as well.
The Acer Nitro 5 comes with a 15.6-inch full HD IPS display. With a full HD display, you get a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080, with which the display delivers relatively vivid and sharp color and visual output. However, brightness is not the best aspect of this display, which makes using the device in bright or outdoor lighting conditions frustrating. The IPS panel gives you good viewing angles, which will be beneficial for gaming. If you are after a laptop with ultrathin bezel on its display, you should look elsewhere, because the bezel of the Nitro 5’s screen is the exact opposite of ultrathin bezel. It looks big and chunky, occupying quite a lot of screen space, thus adding distractions to your gaming sessions.
The Nitro 5 gaming laptop from Acer is powered by the 8th generation Intel Core i5-8300H quad-core mobile processor, the maximum clock speed of which is 4 GHz. This particular version of the Intel processor can now be seen is a lot of budget-friendly and moderately priced gaming laptops, and it is designed to be faster than its predecessors. With this CPU in the Nitro 5, you can expect the device to deliver above-average performance, excelling in everyday multitasking and enabling satisfying gameplay. However, it is not powerful enough to handle highly graphics-intensive tasks, such as advanced photo and video editing. But, you can still get away with moderately intensive tasks.
The device comes with 8 GB of system memory and 256 GB SSD for storage. While the RAM size may be sufficient for playing some regular games, the recommended memory size for many latest games happens to be more, which means you may not be able to play many of your favorite latest and high spec games.
One of the best aspects of the Acer Nitro 5 is its ventilation and cooling system. With the vents located at the device’s rear, it has twin fans for cooling. In addition, with the NitroSense technology, you get to customize the cooling system, adjusting fan speeds and covering temperatures, based on your needs. Yes, the fan is loud, but not as much as the fans we found in some other laptops.
To enable gaming, the Acer Nitro 5 is comes equipped with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card with 4 GB memory. This graphics card is powerful enough to let you play most of your favorite fast-paced games at higher frame rates, with some games even at their highest graphics settings. However, if you are after more advanced, graphically demanding game titles, the GPU may not be sufficient to play them at their max settings.
The Nitro 5 from Acer comes with a decent selection of ports, considering its moderate price range. It includes a Kensington security lock, an SD card reader, 1 x USB 3.1 Type C Gen 1 port, 3 x USB 3.0 Type-A ports (one 2.0 and two 3.1 Gen 1), an HDMI 2.0 port, a charging port, a combo audio jack, and a gigabit ethernet slot.
Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard on the Nitro 5 is just a typical model you find on most laptops and has nothing special or unique about it. The symbols are given in red, and the keyboard also has red backlighting. However, the backlight seems to work only when the unit is plugged in, which makes it difficult for you to see the keys in low lighting conditions if you don’t have the charger with you. The keyboard, overall, is fairly comfortable to type on, and is fast and responsive as well, making it a reliable choice for gaming. The trackpad, however, is really stiff, requiring you to press it really hard to obtain a response.
While the brand gives a lot of hype about the laptop’s audio system, we find it to be a little overhyped because the sound delivers a lot of echoes, and the overall audio is below par. As a result, you cannot expect your gaming sessions to be extremely impressive.
As far as battery life goes, the laptop is able to last for up to 5 hours on a single full charge, which is a good number for a gaming laptop.
If you have just started with PC gaming, on a budget, or a relatively new gamer playing only less graphically demanding games, for now, the Acer Nitro 5 would be a great choice for you. On the other hand, if you are a professional gamer or into more advanced and latest titles, you may have to look elsewhere. Of course, you will have to compromise on a few things with this choice, but it is something that you would probably do with any device you choose.
